The short-term effect of spinal manipulation in the treatment of infantile colic: a randomized controlled clinical trial with a blinded observer
Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics 1999 Oct;22(8):517-522

By trial days 4 to 7, hours of crying were reduced by 1 hour in the dimethicone group compared with 2.4 hours in the manipulation group. On days 8 through 11, crying

            NEUROLOGIC DISORDERS

Frymann VM , Carney RE , and Springall P
Effect of osteopathic medical management on neurologic development in children

JAOA: The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association 1992 Jun;92(6):729-744

For 3 years, children between 18 months and 12 years of age with and without recognized neurologic deficits were studied at the Osteopathic Center for Children. Neurologic performance significantly improved after treatment in children with diagnosed neurologic problems and to a lesser degree in children with medical or structural diagnoses. The advances in neurologic development continued over a several months' interval.

Seizure disorder in a child with down syndrome - Manuscript in progress

Case study of a 9 month old boy with Down Syndrome, seizure disorder and chronic ear infections. Monthly treatment over 6 visits showed a marked improvement from 100 drop seizures per day to approximately 15 to 20 per day.

Effect of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) on recurrent acute otitis media in children. JAOA: The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association 2002 Aug;102(8):441

We evaluated the effect of OMT on children with recurrent acute otitis media (AOM). Children 3 months to 6½ years old with recurrent AOM were recruited and randomized into "OMT" and "non-OMT" groups. In addition to routine medical care, the "OMT" group received OMT 6-9 times over 6 months each, while the "non-OMT" group had the same number of encounters. Hearing and OMT exams were done at the baseline and at 6 months. There was a measurable difference between the "OMT" and "non-OMT" groups from their pre-study status including fewer surgical interventions or "tubes", fewer average monthly episodes of AOM and fewer average monthly antibiotics prescribed for any reason. Baseline and final tympanograms performed by the audiologist showed that the "OMT" group had more type "a" and "c" compared with type "b" and "open" tympanograms than the "non-OMT's".

Treatment of otitis media with osteopathic manipulation: report of a case and discussion

The Cranial Letter / Cranial Academy 2003 May;56(2):10-12

Results of treatment included resolution of the dysfunctions, improved hearing, drainage and decreased pain. Follow up at one week, one month and three months continued to show the patient to be pain-free with normal hearing upon audiologic analysis.

Effect of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) on childhood otitis media outcomes
JAOA: The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association 1997 Aug;97(8):484

Pilot study:   Both the OMT group and control group improved. However, no surgical referrals were noted in the treatment group.

CEREBRAL PALSY

Woods RH
Osteopathic care of neonates and children.  Osteopathic Annals 1976 Dec;4(12):512-515

Birth trauma has significant implications in neonates and children if uncorrected. The first stages of cerebral palsy are often seen in the nursery. Osteopathic cranial manipulation demonstrates positive results via release of brainstem lesions. Infant distortions in cranial structure are the basis for many lifelong handicaps including otitis media, strabismus, scoliosis, idiopathic epilepsy, allergy problems and flat upper thoracic spines and chronic neck problems in adulthood.

Wilson PT
Cerebral palsy: a study of 92 cases.  The Osteopathic Profession 1954 Feb;21(5):11-15, 28-31

To determine the effectiveness of a combination of osteopathic and cranial manipulative treatment of children with cerebral palsy, a study of 92 was conducted. The data concluded that manipulative treatment gives improvement, that pregnant women should be given appropriate prophylactic supervision, and that infants with suspicious symptoms should be monitored and treated with OMT.

DOWN SYNDROME

Funk SL
Osteopathic manipulative treatment and down syndrome.  The AAO Journal: A Publication of. the American Academy of Osteopathy 2000 Sum;10(2):36-37

A four year-old child with Down Syndrome was evaluated for OMT treatment. He was noted to be socially withdrawn and have muscular and speech abnormalities. With monthly treatment, the patient showed improved motor coordination followed by a more outgoing social behavior with family and friends. The patient now participates in family responsibilities.

Sorrel MA
Osteopathic treatment of down syndrome children.

The Cranial Letter / Cranial Academy 1995 May;48(2):4-7

Anatomic relationships to functional disturbances can be evaluated and treated using cranial osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT). This case study showed improvement in language and fine motor development and facial morphology using OMT.

SCOLIOSIS

Scoliosis and osteopathic manipulative treatment - Manuscript in progress.

Case study of a 9 year old girl with Idiopathic Scoliosis and low back pan.  She was given 3 monthly treatments with OMT and home exercises which she performed faithfully.  Her back pain completely resolved by the third visit.
